TECHNICAL WRITER
Description
We are looking for an experienced Technical Writer/Quality Assurance professional to join our Federal IT consulting practice, which focuses on developing Certification and Accreditation (C&A) packages, policies and procedures, and other information assurance-related projects. You should have a strong knowledge and background in assessing, writing and formalizing a wide range of information assurance documents and be able to generate system diagrams. The right candidate will have a minimum of 2-5 years of experience, will have worked for a federal agency, and will have the specific skills outlined below.
The successful candidate will utilize technical, educational, and acquired writing skills to prepare information security engineering and analytical reports, and related documents. The successful candidate will review and edit material provided by information technology personnel for the proper use of information security terminology, style, direction, content, grammar, punctuation and clarity. A successful candidate should also be able to demonstrate the capability to design and format publications from established templates, and to suggest enhancements to templates and other reports as necessary. This position will be in support of information security engineers and analysts.
You will be working on multiple tasks, so meeting deadlines and a professional demeanor are essential. You may be working at our Fairfax, VA headquarters or deployed periodically to our client sites in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Position Duties
Under the general supervision of the team leader or other senior personnel, performs a wide variety of documentation and technical writing duties related to information security programs and procedures and other assigned deliverables, as required. Follows NIST and other federal and departmental information assurance guidance to develop and edit reports, flowcharts, presentations, and other documents relating to the C&A of federal information systems. Works with government and contractor supervisors, technical support personnel, engineers, and analysts to research, write, edit and proofread technical documentation relating to the C&A of federal information systems. Maintains and tracks documents and their revisions. Distributes physical and electronic copies of revisions to customers. Creates and maintains a document-tracking database.
The successful candidate must be able to:
- Create templates for various information technology-related documents.
- Perform security documentation reviews and edit all documentation for correct grammar and composition, clarity, readability, and for overall quality.
- Review and finalize deliverable documents for various Federal agencies.
- Develop technical materials in accordance with established formats, structures, styles, and terminology.
- Incorporate graphics into technical materials as necessary to enhance clarity, interpretation, and usability.
- Research, organize, and summarize data and industry reference materials.
- Develop and make improvements to design and structure of the company Web site, proposals and promotional material.
- Assist the preparation, presentation, delivery, note-taking, and follow-up of briefings.
- Create/design resumes, letterheads, and brochures.
- Draw charts, graphs, illustrations, and other artwork, using computer programs.
Skills
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Visio, is a must

- Familiarity with Federal, NSA, NIST SP 800 Series (800-26, 800-18, 800-53, 800-53A, etc.) and DoD (DITSCAP) security policy and guidance, security advisories is desired.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in technical writing or equivalent (or a minimum of two years relevant experience)
- Experience working on government IT programs
- Experience with government style guides or another similar technical writing style guide
- Expert Microsoft Office skills (Project, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Mature, professional individual with good judgment
- Must be able to obtain Public Trust clearance (SF-85P)
- Knowledge of and experience in information security industry is a big plus.
